How to Avoid the Complications of Diabetes

Let's face it, the most scarey thing about diabetes is the horrible complications that CAN happen if you don't get the disease under control. Among the most difficult to deal with are kidney and cardiovascular disease. These conditions are dangerous for anyone, but of particular concern to those of us with diabetes.

A new study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, U.S.A., has focused specifically on how much of a factor fat might be in the process of cell death. That's right, cell death! Here's what that means.

Sometimes cells get overloaded with a protein called EF1A-1. A certain amount of this protein is normal and necessary for our cells to function normally. However, if too much of it builds up in the cells it can actually attack those cells and cause them to die. If those cells happen to be in the pancreas, the result is most likely going to be diabetes. If the cells are in the heart or the kidneys, well then that's where the trouble is going to be.

The study found a definite relationship between the build-up of excess saturated fat and too much production of EF1A-1. So once again we're faced with more evidence of the danger of our modern lifestyle with its high consumption of fat. And if you have diabetes, it's absolutely crucial that you lose weight and reduce your consumption of fat.

The encouraging this is that if you have diabetes, it takes only a small weight loss to dramatically improve your health situation. Aim to lose 5-7% of your current weight and you'll be amazed at the difference it can make to your blood sugar levels as well as your blood pressure --- both of which can help you avoid the complications of diabetes. When you weigh less, fat is more easily metabolized in your system. You'll also feel more energetic, which in turn might encourage you to exercise for even more benefit.

It's all tied in together, but start with watching your fat intake. You can find a great diabetic eating regime to help you avoid the complications of diabetes here
